Dixie’s Been Supplying Virginia’s Propane Gas And Oil Since 1946.

Founded June 16, 1946 in Verona, Virginia, Dennis Earhart along with his father, Roy, started Dixie Bottle Gas Company in Staunton, Virginia, as a propane cylinder exchange service provider. Over the years, the Company has grown dramatically, enhanced its product offerings and expanded its service area throughout western and central Virginia. Today, Dixie Gas & Oil proudly carries on the traditions of reliability, excellent customer service and community support – the values that built the Company and have guided its success for more than 70 years.

June 16

Dixie Bottle Gas Company is Founded

On June 16, 1946, Dennis Earhart, along with his father, Roy, founded Dixie Bottle Gas Company on S. Augusta Street in Staunton, VA to offer propane cylinder exchange service in post WWII housing boom. Cylinders were taken to Waldorf, MD to be filled.

Dixie Builds Bulk Storage

Dixie builds a propane bulk storage and refill facility in Verona, VA, the initial construction on the site of the Company’s current headquarters. Cylinders could then be filled locally.
February 1

Dixie Delivers

Dixie becomes the first local company to offer bulk propane delivery to stationary tanks at customer’s homes.
March 21

Main Office Relocated

The main office is moved from Staunton to the current location in Verona. Branch offices are opened in Lexington and Waynesboro, VA and Franklin, WV.

Dixie Adds Gasoline & Motor Oil

With the acquisition of the local Mobil Oil franchise, Dixie diversifies its petroleum products to include gasoline and motor oil, supplying several retail service stations in the Augusta county area.

New Company Name

The Company name was changed to Dixie Gas Corporation.

More Expansion

The heating oil business is expanded with the acquisition of the W.T. Davis Oil Company in Waynesboro. The Company name was changed to DIXIE GAS AND OIL CORPORATION.

Dixie Purchases Augusta Oil Corp.

Heating Oil and gasoline business significantly expanded with the purchase of Augusta Oil Corporation, making Dixie a Gulf Oil distributor.

Dixie Opens Convenience Stores

With the opening of self-service gasoline outlets, branded DE-GO, and several Deno’s stores, Dixie expanded into the convenience store business in Augusta and Highland counties.

January 22

Dixie Acquires R.H. Johnson Oil Company

Dixie acquired the R.H. Johnson Oil Company, an Amoco jobber in Rockbridge County, and new outlets were opened under the Amoco brand.

More Acquisitions

Dixie purchases the assets of Carl Riddlebarger, Inc., in Waynesboro and Interchange Oil Company, a BP jobber in Staunton. Petroleum delivery operations were consolidated into the Verona location.

Amoco Food Shops Added

Amoco Food shops were added to Dixie’s convenience store properties, with locations in Augusta and Rockbridge counties.

Passing The Torch

In 1991, Dennis Earhart, Dixie’s founder, passed away and his son, Chris, became the Company’s president.

Dixie Adds Subway Franchises

Dixie was the first in Augusta County to add SUBWAY® franchises to convenience store locations, in addition to traditional stand-alone operations.

Lexington Branch Office Moves

The Lexington branch office was moved to its current location north of the city and expanded to consolidate Rockbridge county (and south) operations.

Verona Plants Expanded

The Verona propane and petroleum bulk plants were expanded and updated and bulk delivery capability for lubricants was added to packaged product distribution.

Dixie Sells WV Operations

Dixie sells its West Virginia operations to concentrate efforts and resources on growth of the Shenandoah Valley and western Virginia markets.

More Dixie Acquisitions

Dixie acquires a portion of the heating oil assets of Peeler Oil Company of Staunton, the assets of Fisher Oil Company of Staunton, and the assets of Alleghany Oil Company in Covington, expanding service further into Alleghany, Bath, and Botetourt, VA counties and into Greenbrier county WV.

Harrisonburg Bulk Storage Added

A bulk propane storage facility is added north of Harrisonburg, VA, to better serve customers in Rockingham and surrounding counties.

Dixie Acquires Monger Coal and Oil

Dixie acquires the assets of Monger Coal and Oil in Elkton adding a branch office and petroleum bulk plant there to better serve Rockingham, Page, Albemarle, Greene and Madison counties.

Dixie acquires the customer and delivery operations of Whiting-Rockbridge Oil (PMI) in Lexington, VA, expanding the heating oil market in Rockbridge and Botetourt counties.

Dixie Partners with GES & EDAC
